On 19th August morning, Dr. Ambrose So Shu Fai, representative of our College’s donor Dr. Stanley Ho, was invited to deliver a speech at the “College Master’s Welcome Reception for Freshmen” held in the College’s refectory.
In his speech, Dr. So reiterated Dr. Stanley Ho’s vision to benefit Macao society and improve the welfare of its citizens by quoting what Dr. Ho said back in 1962, “The view that our enterprise is merely one of a gambling character is a misconception. Our purpose is to bring a new prosperity to Macao and improve the welfare and living standard of its citizens.” He further explained to the students why Dr. Ho had chosen SHEAC to be named after him, not only because of its special history as one of the two pilot residential colleges at the University, but also because of his deep affection for UM dating back to its establishment in 1981, at a time when the University was called University of East Asia.
Dr. So talked about the imperfection of university education and offered the solution of “Lifelong Learning” to the dilemma. To further elaborate this, Dr. So inspired the students with a quote “居之無倦” from Lun Yu, which originally referred to the art of governing, meaning that one has to keep one’s affairs before the mind without weariness, and to practise them with undeviating consistency. Dr. So said “The same teaching can be applied to one’s educational process, not only in the pursuit of knowledge, but also in moral development, both of which are essential elements in building a harmonious society.” He ended the speech by setting a challenge for each student to be a dreamer, a doer and a lifelong learner.
Dr. So, accompanied by College Master Prof. Iu Vai Pan and Associate Master Dr. Andy Ip, had cordial conversations with our freshmen, student leaders and College fellows during the luncheon. He also visited some of the student rooms and common areas of the College, in the company of the Associate Master, Resident Fellows, freshmen and student leaders.
Dr. Ambrose So is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SJM and Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong-listed SJM Holdings Limited. He is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Honorary Consul of Portugal in Hong Kong, President of Macau Military Club, as well as a member of the Economic Development Council and of the Cultural Consultative Council of the Macao SAR Government. Dr. So was awarded Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by UM in 2012, and was named the first Honourable Alumus of the UM Alumni Association. In addition, he was awarded the Honorary University Fellowship by The University of Hong Kong in 2005, the Medal of Merit – Culture by the Macao government in 2009, and Comendador da Ordem do Mérito by the President of Portugal in 2014. A devoted artist in Chinese calligraphy, Dr. So has held various solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and major cities in China, and his works are in the collections of notable museums and universities.
