This was a rewarding experience for the students. One participant reflected on her experience in volunteering, by which she was deeply moved:

“Because of the light in his shining eyes, I felt like I was lighting. In that moment, I truly felt the essence of education – not just for the students, but for myself as well. During a break, a student discreetly handed me a bracelet woven from fine rubber bands. He shyly smiled at me before quickly running off. I don’t know how long he spent crafting this bracelet or the effort he put into it, yet he generously gave it to me. I felt deeply honored. I love that kind of smile – innocent, pure, and radiant.”

Stanley Ho East Asia College (SHEAC) of the University of Macau has successfully conducted an 8-day service-learning programme in Xiushui County, Jiangxi Province from 23rd May to 30th May. SHEAC students provided voluntary teaching services to local primary schools, visited an elderly nursing home, and took part in patriotic educational activities. This service-learning programme has been carried out under the guidance and support of the Xiushui County Government. Through the process of offering quality social services to the local community, SHEAC students have gained valuable experiences.

This service-learning programme was in response to our country’s rural revitalisation plan, which was jointly participated by the Macao SAR Government, the Liaison Office of the Central Government in Macao, and the Government of Jiangxi Province. The programme was aimed at supporting the development of Xiushui County. To ensure an effective and safe execution, SHEAC resident fellows conducted a site visit last December, and selected Shangbei Primary School in Shangfeng Town and an elderly nursing home as the service sites.

Preparation work for the service programme began as early as March. The team attempted to identify appropriate social services that could best meet the needs of Shangbei Primary School and the elderly nursing home, especially since these two service sites had already seen significant improvements in their hardware infrastructure through the national poverty alleviation efforts. After rounds of discussion, it was decided to focus on the software aspect: providing interactive experiential learning activities for the school children and the elderly.

During the service period, resident fellow Dr. Chan U Wai and 13 SHEAC students taught science, geography, life education, and physical education classes to pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Through engaging and fun activities such as drama education and experiments, the pupils gained knowledge in various aspects, for example, “mysteries of light and color” in the science class, and how to manage emotions in the life education class. During breaks and lunchtime, the SHEAC team also conducted games and conversations with the teachers and pupils, sharing joyful moments together. SHEAC also donated RMB 5,000, raised from a charity sale in January, to the school to support the purchase of audio equipment.

The team also visited an elderly nursing home, where they performed singing and introduced cuisine from Macao and Guangdong Province. Another focus of this service-learning programme was to provide patriotic education for the SHEAC students. The visits to Qiushou Uprising Xiushui Memorial Hall, Shanbei Cultural Exhibition Hall, and the Hometown of Huang Tingjian have enhanced the students’ understanding about and belonging to their home country.
