“And on this day, we witnessed the reality. In the room without lights during the day, the elderly with difficulties living alone, and the phone numbers that cannot be remembered. Those bits and pieces of details outline the real dilemma, and at the same time it makes people feel sad, feel how majestic and pure the life force is.”

From 23rd May to 4th June, 2024, a team of 14 students, led by Associate Master Dr. Sancia Wan and Resident Fellow Ms. Elaine Chang, went to Wenchuan, Sichuan for volunteer services and cultural exchanges. As the key part of the summer service-learning programme of SHEAC, this trip helped participating students gain a deeper understanding of issues such as national development, cultural conservation of ethnic minorities, post-disaster recovery, and rural revitalisation. Through voluntary teaching, community services and visits, the team also supported the local communities.

This 13-day trip to Sichuan was comprised of diverse service and cultural activities. With the assistance of the local government and social organisations, the SHEAC team first went to two schools to conduct voluntary teaching. At Bayi Primary School, SHEAC volunteers organised an interactive “anti-school bullying” class for pupils in three classes of fourth grade. Through an animation, short play demonstrations, and discussion, the school children obtained a deeper understanding of the threats of school bullying, and reflect on how to jointly create a friendly campus. At Shuimo Middle School, the team explored the “outside world” with students, and discussed the cultural differences between Sichuan and Macau. Lively and interesting illustrations and quizzes enabled everyone to deepen their understanding of each other’s cultures.

During the trip, SHEAC teachers and students visited elderly people and children in need in Wenchuan County in groups; and organised various interesting activities for the elderly and children, such as organising an origami workshop for children, as well as a croquet beginner class and chess games for the elderly. In a kindergarten, the team also held games and exciting performances for about 200 children to celebrate the Children’s Day together.

In addition to the above-mentioned services, SHEAC students learned about rural life in the Mainland and the achievements of the country’s poverty alleviation and rural revitalisation work through homestay experience. The team hiked up the mountain and spent three days in Fenghuang Village where they lived, dined and worked together with their host families. The students gained an in-depth understanding of the geographical environment and characteristics of the rural village, experienced farmwork, and shared views with the village leaders about the village development after field study. The team cooperated with local community organisations to co-organise the “Village Banquet” and “Bonfire Party”, where the students conversed with elderly villagers, and brought them singing and dancing performances.

The last part of the journey consisted of patriotic educational visits, including visiting and studying the Yingxiu Earthquake Site in Wenchuan and the UNESCO site Dujiangyan Irrigation System. At the same time, teachers and students summarised, reflected and reviewed the outcomes of the entire programme. Students expressed that the programme gave them a deep understanding of the fruitful results of the country’s efforts on rural revitalisation and post-disaster restoration in Sichuan.
